Is peanut OK with BAM?
It depends on how much, and here is why
Peanut carries roughly 49 g of fat per 100 g. Bile acid malabsorption is a question of how much fat arrives at once rather than of any single ingredient, so Munchable reads the fat figure off the label first and uses it whenever it is there. Where a label gives no fat figure, it reads the ingredients list instead, and peanut is treated as a caution wherever it appears on the list.
On a real product, the reason Munchable shows reads: peanut is a main ingredient and carries around 49 g fat per 100 g, with no fat figure on the label
What it is called on a label
Peanut is also printed as groundnut, groundnuts, peanuts. Munchable recognises all of these as the same ingredient, which is the point of scanning rather than reading: the wording changes between brands and the rule does not.
What Munchable checks for Bile acid malabsorption
- Total fat per serving, using the pack’s own serving size where it gives one
- Fat per 100 g as a fallback, flagged as such so you know the basis
- Fat-dense ingredients where the label reports no fat at all: oils, butter and other rendered fats, cream, nut and seed butters, nuts, seeds, coconut, cheese, cured fatty meats, chocolate and pastry
- Where each of those sits on the ingredients list, so a main ingredient outranks a trace
- A "can’t assess" verdict where a pack gives neither a fat figure nor a fat-dense ingredient, never a green light
The full reasoning, and the evidence behind it, is in the Bile acid malabsorption guide.

The catch with reading labels yourself
Knowing that peanut is a problem is the easy part. Finding it is the hard part: it hides behind wordings that do not look like it, it matters more near the top of the list than the bottom, and a product you have bought for years quietly reformulates. That is the job Munchable does in the aisle, in about a second, from the barcode.
