Low FODMAP shopping, without reading every label twice
The low FODMAP pattern is the best-evidenced dietary approach for IBS, and it is also the fiddliest to shop for. Munchable reads the ingredients list for you and tells you which FODMAP group it found, and how much it matters.
What FODMAPs actually are
FODMAP is an acronym for a family of short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine: fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. They draw water into the gut and are fermented by bacteria in the colon, which for someone with IBS can mean bloating, pain and urgency.
They are not unhealthy foods, and the low FODMAP diet is not meant to be permanent. It is usually run as a short elimination phase followed by structured reintroduction, ideally with a dietitian, to find which groups you personally react to and at what amount.
Why packaged food is the hard part
Whole foods are the easy case: an onion is an onion. Packaged food is where the pattern breaks down, because the FODMAP sources hide under names that do not look like food. Inulin, chicory root fibre, fructo-oligosaccharides and "natural flavouring" carrying onion or garlic all show up in products that read as perfectly plain.
Amount matters as much as presence. Wheat flour as the first ingredient in a loaf is a very different proposition from wheat starch as the ninth ingredient in a sauce. Munchable uses the position of an ingredient on the label, and the percentage estimates where the product carries them, to tell those two cases apart instead of flagging both the same way.
How Munchable decides
Munchable keeps a curated map of ingredients to FODMAP groups, built from published literature rather than copied from any single database. Potent sources such as onion, garlic, inulin and the polyol sweeteners are treated as high FODMAP even in modest amounts. Less potent sources are flagged as a caution unless they are a main ingredient, in which case the verdict escalates.
You get one reason per FODMAP group rather than a wall of duplicates, so a product with three fructan sources reads as one clear fructan flag with the ingredient that triggered it named.
